Finally it's done - the main pattern on the front of the bag might have been one of the most intricate and time intense toolings I have made so far. Therefore I decided to keep the rest of the bag rather simple.
This bag is actually a present for my dear mom who always wanted a shoulder bag from me - I guess she will be happy with it...

Of course the patterns are self-designed.

Recent Custom Works: Leather Bracers for the Viking Metal Masters of Einherjer

This job was a very special one and the result is among my best works so far, from the design to the final items. When I was contacted by the girlfriend of the band's drummer to make bracers for the guys of Einherjer it was as much honour as challenge. This band, and especially their Aurora Borealis - Demo had a huge impact on me and is still one of the very first names when it comes to true Viking Metal.
I had quite free hands in all regards and so I went through all the artworks of their releases looking for something that would look good on leather. However I just found one symbol they were repeatedly using throughout the years but I felt that I had to take it and to change it a bit.
The result has not too much to do with the original, though I have to say it became a beautiful piece of art.

Since not both bracers of each pair should display the same designs, I decided to create the second part myself from the scratch. The result was this not necessarily groundbreaking but still very effective image of viking-style helmet, axe, sword and shield, the latter incorporating an E for (you guess it) EINHERJER, also with a certain norse-twist.

As almost all my designs it became way too complicated to be used one-to-one but I hate to limit myself when I am in the process of creation so I prefered to implement the full scope of my artistic vision in the patterns. Then, prior to the actual tooling, I just had to figure out which extent of it would be possible to execute on the leather and which elements had to be removed.

However the sheer amount of details I was able to accomplish acctually surprised myself. I did 4 pairs of these bracers and I was satisfied with each of them.
Another very special thing about this work was my payment - I did not make this job for money but for ink! I got an underarm half-sleeve for my efforts, made by my client Renathe Horvei Bryn herself - she is an excellent tattoo-artist working at the Karma Tattoo Studio in Haugesund, Norway.

This medium sized drinking horn is a unique tribute to the immortal old norse customs of celebration.

The self-designed ornamental patterns on this individual item are inspired by different norse styles of art commonly associated with the viking age. For the decoration two different techniques were used: Carving and Pyrography - the deep bas-relief carving and the warm brown tones of the burned parts give an exquisite contrast and depth.
The runic inscriptions dedicate this horn to Odin and vow the drink taken from this ritual vessel.

It is seldom that I am absolutely satisfied with one of my works. Strange but true last week was an exception and all pieces I finished recently turned out into what I would call my personal masterpieces.
This epic bracer is part of a pair and was a custom work for the vocalist of the famous Viking Death Metal band Amon Amarth.
The terms of reference were easy - the bracers should be like my good old and bestselling Hammer bracers but with buckles instead of a lacing.

One of the bracers should display Odin or something related to him and the other a Thor's hammer. So I designed a pattern showing Odin's face crowned by his Ravens and some surrounding knotwork. I took inspiration from some wooden statues as well as the famous Aarhus Mask.
While the Odin Bracer is a quite intricate one, I wanted to make the hammer a bit more simple. I wanted to create a new Mjölnir but as close to the originals as possible, a pattern that you easily could imagine as a pendant.

Finally I made it. It was in July 2010 I presented this carved Knife here on my blog and since then I was planing to make a fitting sheath. Well, now it is done and I think it's good.

The Knife itself consists of a Mora-blade and carved reindeer antler.

The sheath is made of solid 4mm veg. tanned leather, hand tool, dyed and sewn.

The design of this viking belt bag was also inspired by the hilt of a sword found in the grave of a noble woman in Suontaka Finland.
After finishing the wristband from my last post, I studied the sword of Suontaka a bit more and became totally overwhelmed by the patterns on it's hilt. Since I was planning to make another belt bag for a while, I found these patterns quite fitting for the sake and so I took them and changed them slightly to match the shape of the bag, added some own ideas and so on.
I really love the result and right now I think about to create a belt for it as well. This depends on my spare time and as soon as this bag will be for sale (with or without an appropriate belt) I will update this post.

This work is a kind of collaboration with Leidungr, a swedish neofolk ambient project formed 2010.
If you are into obscure folk stuff you should definitely check them out - I am sure that their debut album will be one of the best releases in 2011, certainly the best non-metal release. So far you can only check out their Youtube channel where you find some great examples of their musical art. Leidungr's YouTube channel

This design is thought to become a part of their logo - that's the reason I put it into the designs and interfaces section.
Maybe some of you might think that this seems familiar and you are right. The design is based on a rather bad black and white picture I got from Leidungr, showing this sunwheel in an inappropriate angle. So my job was partly reconstruction and inventing the parts that weren't visible in the foto to get it into a frontal position.
We don't know the exact origin of the reference picture or the wooden sunwheel depicted so if anyone knows it - do not hesitate to let me know ;)
However I assume it could be of german origin probably from the first half of the last century

How to order a custom work from Wodenswolf?

First of all you need to write an e-mail to me - you find the adress in my profile.
Please let me know as exact as possible what you are out for - the more you tell me right from the start the less mails we got to write to get to the finished items ;)
So tell me your wishes with all the details that are important for you!

The next step will be that I create the design for your custom work and provide you with a kind of sketch that gives you an idea about how the final piece will look like.
You get this attached to an email and you can either approve the design or veto against my suggestion and tell me what to change. We will play this game until you have no further suggestions for improvement.

The next step is the payment - for extremely personalized stuff including names, logos, coat of arms etc. I demand the full price in advance, for works that would be alienable in spite of the individual character, only half of the price is demanded beforehand.

Now it's my turn to craft your item - this might take one day, one week or one month, depending on the complexity and the necessary efforts. But at this point you will already have an estimate from my side about how long you have to wait.

As soon as the item is ready, you will get another email with attached images of the finished product.

Then it's time for shipping and we are ready!

Here's my translation of the text on the petition site for those who are not able to understand swedish - it might be far from perfect, but I think it's enough to explain the whole thing:

Say NO to another licensed Wolf Hunt in 2011!

On january the 15 th 2011 the starting shot will be fired for another extensive wolfhunt in Sweden.

In spite of the fact that the population is small and fragile, Sweden continues to shot wolves this winter.

Last years' hunt resulted in the shoting of many alpha leaders and that one of the last year's litters was left without their parents. There are no indications that these puppies might have survived. Furthermore, in relation to the size of the wolf population, too many wolves were shot and additionally the death rate has been unusually high after the hunt. The difficult genetic situation hasn't improved and any hunt will further aggravate the state. If genetic strengthening will work out is not known yet.

In 2011 there are plans to shot 20 wolves in the six counties Dalarna, Gävleborg, Västra Götaland, Värmland, Örebro och Västmanlands län. Again about 10 % of the wolf population are supposed to be shot, despite the fact that Wolves are a heavily endangered species in Sweden. The hunt will be carried out in the same way as last year, which means that there are no restrictions taking the wolves into consideration. Neither parental couples with puppies nor offspring from immigrated wolves are protected.

In Sweden there's no possibilty to appeal against the licensed hunt, even though it lacks a legal as well as a scientific basis. Therefore Svenska Rovdjursföreningen, Naturskyddsföreningen, Världsnaturfonden WWF and Djurskyddet Sverige reported last winter's hunt to the responsible EU-commission. A reply is yet anticipated.

The swedish government motivates the hunt with the argument that it obtains acceptance for wolves. However a majority of the swedish folk, even in regions with an occurence of wolves, has already a positive opinion towards wolves in Sweden. On the other hand there's no indication at all that the minorities which oppose the wolf have changed their minds to a more tolerant stance since last year's wolf hunt.

Show the swedish politicians that you take a stance against the hunt and support the wolf!

Make your voice heard and sign the petition below that will be handed over to Environment Secretary Andreas Carlgren.

Take the cahnce and become a member of the Svenska Rovdjursföreningen/Swedish Association for Predators: www.rovdjur.se.

Appeal!

* I protest against the licensed wolf hunt 2011 in Sweden and demand that it stops! No licensed wolf hunt before there is a wolf population in Sweden that is genetically healthy and viable!

* I also protest against the limitation of the wolf population to a maxiumum number of 210 individuals! Let the population grow and set a new preliminary aim of 400 wolves until there is a plan for a long-sighted viable wolfpopulation in Sweden!

Background information:

Sweden has one of the most vulnerable european wolf populations; it is small, isolated and genetically heavily impoverished.
Furthermore in Sweden a lot of wolves get killed, legally and illegally. The recent activities are completely out of the authorities' control and there has been a strong escalation in association with the licensed hunt. Just in 2010 about 40 swedish wolves have been shot legally - out of a total population number of approximately 250 individuals. Out of the total death rate of around 60 wolves in one year the majority of cases were due to hunting. Another unknown quantity of dead wolves has to be added due to illegal hunt.

- Any hunt corrupts the situation for the very vulnerable wolf population.

- The plan of releasing genetically unrelated wolves struggles against huge problems and is insufficient.

This is the very first wallet I've ever made and it even contains some for me very untypical decoration. This is the nice thing about custom works - sometimes you are forced to think in a slightly different way which leads to further artistic progression. While I was planning to do a wallet already since at leat one year, I was certainly not planning to incorporate any non-european big cat in one of my works, especially not a rather naturalistic version. This drinking horn was a custom work I dealt with during the last weeks - I think this turned out to become my best hornwork so far... The designing process was great - it was done freehand onto the horn, just the way I like it most - first with a lead pencil and after some small changes and the final approval of the customer with a permanent marker. Last but not least the bas-relief carving followed.

This time I did not carve the drinking horn, instead I used a kind of pyrography and as you can see there are no lines but a lot of dots forming the pattern. It was my first horn pyrography since a lot of years and I did this more or less just for fun between two comissions. A very relaxing work and there will be more like this to come... Furthermore I think a combination of carving and burning might be extremely nice?! I did the design while I was working on it, step by step.

Leather dog collar decorated with ornamental viking design and the dog's name. It has a D-Ring closure instead a buckle closure. I personally prefer this type of closure for the collars of my own dogs since they are very easy to put on and take off again. Of course these are not designed to choke the dogs even if the D-ring closure uses kind of the same concept as a choke collar. However there's a stop which prevents the choking effect. So the minimum extent of the collars is calculated with regards to the actual circumference of the dog's neck.

Yes, another custom work - this time leather and less mind-boggling effort. However, I often catch myself these days designing patterns that look great but that are almost impossible when it comes to the final execution... It's all a matter of size and when it comes to leather tooling this is a crucial wisdom. But we all need challenges and so I tried to get this pattern onto this very tiny little cuff and succeeded with almost no loss of detail - don't ask me how but it worked!

Recent Custom Works: Lugh's Knot Wedding Horns

This job was close to driving me crazy. It was not the first time I carved horns but the first time the horns were for the customers' wedding - so I was constantly aware of the high relevance this work would have for the couple and their pagan marriage ceremony... Furthermore I had to do a pair - a pair that should be almost identical, apart from the fact that they are mirrored.
And doing two identical horns means a total different strategy - so it took me almost two days of work to trace the design onto the horns.
Usually, or at least very often, I design the patterns freehand on the horn - something that was completely out of question this time...
So before I even could think about tracing any patterns, I needed to have the patterns first. Fortunately the classic celtic knotwork bands and the central Lugh's knot pattern were given so I "just" needed some knotwork band for the intermediate parts. And, call it a creative logjam or whatever, it took me ages to come up with this one:
This was a real bastard to carve, but in the end it turned out well and the couple was really satisfied and happy with the result. And this is what makes me happy, too!

Recent Works: The Serpent's Bite - Viking Knife With Carved Antler Handle

Another one of those things I ever wanted to do is to combine my two favourite crafts - carving and knife-making. I mean, is there anything that screams as loud for a carved decoration like a knife handle made from antler? I think not.
So I took this knife which I actually made a few years ago but never finished. It served me in it's unfinished state sometimes as a working knife, sometimes it was completely forgotten.
I just found it again a while ago and after all the progression of my carving abilities in recent times, I decided to finally dare it. There was this little wrist cuff lying around and I thought, "Hey, this pattern would be great for this handle!" and after 5 minutes of freehand transfering and some further hours of work the result was convincing. This is the first one in a long row of knifes with carved handles - you can be pretty sure about that!
Since I do not know when I'll be able to make a fitting sheath, this piece is not for sale yet. However if you are interested in a "pre-order" don't hesitate to contact me!

At Work: Carving a Thor's Hammer Bone Pendant

After many many requests about how I carve the bone jewelry, I decided to show the process of making a Thor's Hammer here step by step. Keep in mind that this is NOT a real tutorial, since these steps display my personal way to reach my aim and may be totally improper for others.
Though I am of course happy if you find it helpful for your own work.

Let's start!
Of course there are some things needed before the actual carving work starts.
First of all there was the design which you can see above. And a pile of "material" which you can see below.

I often get questions about the bones I use. Usually I simply buy bovine bones in the supermarket, frozen and filled with marrow. This is when my little helpers (see pic above) come into the play.
During weeks of intense engagement they clean them very well and make them almost ready for the use. However, the sun and the weather are additional factors in the preparation process of the material.

The last step of preparation would be to choose a suitable piece of bone and to roughly cut it out.

Below you can see numbered pictures of the following working steps including the actually used attachments/accessories for my Dremel Power Tool. (click on them to make em bigger, you know?!)
The numbers correspond with the steps of work. If there's no number on the single pictures, it means that they show the result of the previous procedure.
Underneath you will find a short description of each particular step.

1. Transfering of the design onto the roughly cutted and grinded bone
2. Engraving the outlines with a medium sized, round-headed, engraving cutter
3. Cutting out the workpiece and beveling of some of the hard edges, using an engraving cutter with a cylindric head for both procedures

4. Using a big sized, round-headed, engraving cutter to deepen the section around the bottom knotwork
5. Using a small sized, round-headed, engraving cutter to deepen all important lines
6. Adjusting irregularities of the surface and the thickness of the workpiece

7. Using a small sized, round-headed, engraving cutter to deepen all important lines that may have vanished during the previous working step
8. Shaping of all edges with an engraving cutter with a cylindric head
9. Engraving the cuts on the lateral sections with a conic headed cutter
10. Using big sized, round-headed, engraving cutter to make the dots in the background of the bottom section
11. Using a small sized, round-headed, engraving cutter to deepen all important lines, add some new ones and "dotting" the lateral areas

12. Using different Diamond Wheel Point accessories for grinding down and smoothing

13. The final sanding with good old school sandpaper
14. Polishing

If you are looking for a good leather belt with some kind of viking style decoration, you may have realized that something like that is quite hard to find out there.
Either you have those really nice authentic looking ones with great metal buckles and strap ends that fit perfectly to viking costume for the next reenactment event - but less perfect to your every day outfit.
Or you find those with poorly embossed and boring celtic knotwork patterns.
So I decided to do something for you guys and girls out there.

The inspiration for this belt comes partly from the early Viking Age ornaments of the Oseberg period. (It's my favourite style btw.)
It is one of the most typical viking styles and is less celtic influenced.
The runic inscription "Mattr ok Megin" is thought to summon the power and the might of the individual who will wear this piece one day.

It is 4.5 cm/1.8 inches broad while the the ends are cut out somewhat narrower (ca. 1.5 in) to ensure that almost every common buckle should fit.
It is a snap-on belt - so you can fasten your buckle with two snaps.
It is 125 cm/49.2 inches long (excl. buckle)

Bracer "New Dawn"
Maybe when I did this piece I was a bit inspired by the long winter this year and the actual wish for the sun to return, maybe those feeling inspired only the name I gave to this pattern.
Anyway, since I made my own Thor's Hammer design recently, I wanted to do my own version of another very important symbol of germanic paganism - the Irminsul.
I think I was fairly successful with my approach of combining this old sign with my own style.

Bracer "Svarog"
This design is my tribute to the slavonic pagan traditions I find really inspiring.
I think there may be some more works in the future using slavonic or baltic symbols. But since I am not that familiar with these styles, this will probably stay single attempts every now and then unless there will be a good response forcing me to do more ;)

These custom knives are perfectly suitable for every outdoor enthusiast or collector of nordic knives.

Jotun
This damascus steel blade is made by the famous Poul Strande from Denmark.
Measures: 105mm x 27mm x 4mm

The handle is made of brass, leather, reindeer antler, stabilized curly birch and stab. maple burl.

The whole knife has a length of 241 mm and a weight of 149 g (without the sheath)

With this second clock I followed the same inspiration as with the first one (look at my recent post) however I chose a kind of different way of expression than with my usual works.
I went completely without my normal viking/celtic paterns this time. Anyhow there is the same spirit of antiquity which I always aspire.

As you may realize when you look at my works I have a very deep connection to Wolves and indeed my view on this very special animal is almost religious.

So in the beginning this work was more for my own pleasure, furthermore to enter a rather naturalistic and traditional style of leather tooling, thought as a singular attempt.
But I think that this turned out so fine that there will certainly be follow-ups.

Recent Works: Dragon Clock

A while ago I had the idea of crafting a clock. I think in our modern times we have a certain view on time that is rather invalid. Sayings like "Time is Money" are quite symptomatic of this view and so we often have somehow negative associations like stress and pressure when we think about time. And we have a quite linear conception concerning time.
However, in the olden times there was a rather circular understanding of the topic.
And here we come close to my own approach with my crafted clocks.
I think, there is actually no better symbol for the circles of nature as the good old round clock.
I wanted to bring a bit of this ancient time-concept back into our awareness and give the grandeur back to time!

For this clock I used my own designed patterns. The pattern in the middle section is a typical circular ornament in viking style, the dragon around it bites it's own tail and so both patterns refer straight to the above mentioned ancient understanding of time.

Here's the latest Drinking Horn I carved. This time I used my Dremel Tool only for the rough part and put much more effort into the refining work with my good old Mora Knives.
The patterns I used are my own designs.
I also made a holder for the customer which you can see below:

The Horn is 44 cm long and holds 0,5 l of fluid. It was sold for 340 $ (including the holder).

Well, after some time of blog absence, I am back with some new stuff. Due to some chaotic conditions in my every-day life I wasn't that productive during the last months, at least when it comes to crafting new items. However I managed to do some new original designs for my next works. Here some examples:

Circles of the beasts:

Explanation: One of the main impulses for my artworks is nature. The beast in us is a primordial heritage which still (spell)binds us to our origin. There is no contradiction between nature (which is our origin) and a creative culture (which makes us human). Rather it is this cultural ability that gives us the possiblity to use and control these dynamic natural traits on a conscious level that is unique among all species. In these patterns (like in the old ages) the borders between nature and culture are reversed, the beast is transcended into the root of the spirit.
To put those beasts into these circular shapes was a conscious decision to merge the untamed power of the animal within us with the dynamic of the ancient fylfot (swastika) which is the basic pattern for the three designs above.

Older Works: Viking Belt Bag "Fenrir"

I consider this belt bag to be one of my best works so far - even more astonishing that I always forgot to post it here...
The design of the bag itself goes back to the time when we made stuff for reenactment, so it is a classical "Viking" belt bag. But the belt bags we made at this time were much easier and less decorated.

The main-pattern on this pouch is an own one, it is displaying the fettered Fenrir. Also the knotworks and tri-weave are drawn and tooled free-hand - I never use these ready-made stamps.

Commissioned Works: Sax Knife

This was a commissioned work for a friend of mine - though I had a lot of artistic freedom.

The Sax-blade is made from some carbon steel (nothing special) and is the only thing I could not manufacture myself so I got it from a friend. So do not ask me questions about the blade - my answers will be quite unsatisfying ;)

The handle is made from some very interesting materials.
The first part is some usual deer antler. But the way I used it shall remind a bit on the shape of bronze age swords.
Then there are the intermediate pieces of leather.
The next part is oak - moor oak to be precise. This means, this piece of wood could easily be around 5000 years old...
After the next piece of leather, there is a piece of oak again.
But a special one again!
Some of you may know the story about the Donar-Oak (Donareiche) which was a sacred place for the Chatti and other ancient germanic tribes of central Germany.
In the year 723 Bonifatius had the oak felled in an attempt to convey the superiority of the Christian God over Thor and the native Germanic religion.
However, and this part is not told by common history pages, the germanic people did not renunciate directly after christianisation and planted a new oak which stood there until the mid of the last century. Only few people know about the place where the remains of this ancient tree can be found.
And this handle is made of it's wood!
If you don't believe this (I swear that I do it!) it may just be a piece of a very very old common german oak...

The sheath is made from veg tanned leather as all my leather works - the viking design is an own one and the Wolfangel is part of the family crest of my friend who will get this wonderful piece...

I already began with this work almost one year ago and then completely forgot about it.
When it came back to my consiousness a few days ago, I decided to finally finish it and I think it turned out quite good. It is not the most inventive design of all times - this Gotland pattern is used by many (leather-)artists. However I like it's vintage and even a bit battered look. It looks as antique as possible, I would say.

Awful Thors Hammer - My heir to the world?

This one is a funny story - first of all - Have you ever seen a Thor's Hammer which was poorer than this one?
Ok, maybe you have, but it is definetely a quite awful one.
However, the story around it is worth telling.

A few years ago, at the very first beginning of my work with leather, I wasn't dealing with all these nice tools and carvings - I was decorating into the leather with a kind of branding tool or -pen. Often I did this freehand without a tracing and the work shown above is one of the results. Afterwards I scanned it - as all my works at that time - and took the ugly Hammer-design again and again, also improving it a bit over the time.
I completely forgot about this crappy (well at least crappy from todays point of view) design until I came across an online shop selling bracers with just that ugly hammer on it!!! I was laughing and I am not a person who cares that much about copyright issues, but I also was shocked that just an awful work as that one develops an autonomus life... Probably this will be my heir to the world?!

This work is also already a few months old, due to the fact that I did not craft that much during that time. I was simply too busy with everything around the first litter of my wolfdog female, fostering the pups and so on. But as I did not post this very special one yet, at least not on this blog, I thought it would be time.

It is a new design of bracers, similar to the wristbands I posted in march. The design is my own and I consider the main-pattern as one of my best ornamental works.
It is very close to the animals of the Mammen style and as the name of the bracer says it - it is the "hell-hound" Garm who is depicted. In the norse mythology this awful dog guards the entrance to the underworld, called "Hel" in ancient times.

After the snow has melted away, many many forgotten cow bones occured - something that happens if you have dogs and a big garden...
Instead of throwing them away, I started to create some nice new pieces of art:
Some pendants made of cow bone - just now my favourite kind of work...

The first pendant is inspired by an old carving in Urnes style, but slightly changed.
The second one is one of my own designs - a typical viking-style beast I used a few times on leather so far - this one actually gave me the idea to start again with a bit of bone-carving, simply because I wanted to see this pattern in another medium. This one is my own and won't be sold - sorry!
The Mjölnir-pendant is also self designed - actually while doing it - but I am pretty satisfied with all 3...

Recent works: Some braclets

A few weeks ago I just thought about these boring usual wristbands you can get everywhere, tied together with a simple whang (leather-straps) - I guess you get the point. Of course these more simple braclets can be nice, too. But I wanted to try something different and these pieces are the first results - and I am quite satisfied with them! The buckle enclosure is far more practical than leather strings.
The patterns on the 3 wristbands displayed here are self-designed, two of them inspired by viking-animal ornaments and one goes more into a celtic direction with it's typical knotwork.

I improved the points that weren't perfect, so this time it is hand-sewn AND riveted. Apart from this it's quite the same construction.

This collar is a kind of prototype. Though it is not the first dog collar I have ever made, it is still a new design I thought out over a longer period. This collar itself contains some minor optical imperfections - I wasn't that accurate while working on it, not knowing if it would turn out to fulfil my demands - just wanted to avoid wasting time. ;)
I made it and started trying it with my Saarlooswolfdog bitch Skadi directly.
It showed that this design works pretty well and combines functionality with noble appearance - just like it should.
This piece is only riveted instead of sewn - in the future I will prefer a combination of both for the ultimate safety of the dog.
The inner side is padded which results in a better wearing comfort for the dog.
When looking at the picture, please mind that the collar was already in a somewhat used condition when the photo was taken.

Recent Works: A belt for myself

I was thinking about this since a very long time now, but somehow I never had the time to actually put my plan into practice. I have done belts before, but this one for myself should be more than a simple leather strap holding my pants up.
Of course one of my aims with creating this belt was simply to show my skills on an item used on a daily basis. Something that I can always have with me, where ever I go. I often got into situations speaking about my arts but having nothing to show in real life. This belt should sovle this problem.
A second task this item should be able to fullfil: When wandering through the woods with my dogs, I often wished to be able to keep my hands free, even if the dogs have to stay on the leaches. Therefore I added the two D-rings and a snap-hook to this belt which will make this wish come true.
The patterns I used on this piece are all self-designed and have been inspired by viking-age Jelling style. It took me something more than 2 days to finish this work.

Older Works IV - Sax Knives

I've only done 3 Sax Knives so far. The reason is simple - as I am not able to make the blades myself, I need to get them somewhere else. And I simply did not find a reliable source for this kind of blades yet. This was my first one and it's obvious that I wasn't that skillful 5 years back in time. The sheath was one of my first tries with stamping tools and the sax knive itself is also much more primitive than my recent works. Probably I will revise it one day... The handle is made of antler and horn. The blade was made by a friend and is of simple carbon steel. This piece was not that good, but it was a certain step of my artistic evolution.

This second one was way better than my first try and was sold pretty fast. It is visible that I was much more experienced in knifemaking as in the use of the leather tools and it is still a piece which I am very proud of. The sheath is ornamented with a pattern in Oseberg-style. The handle is made of curly birch, antler and leather.

Older works III - Knives

This is certainly one of my favourite artistical occupations - making knives is a very satisfying work for me. I am obsessed by knives as long as I can think. I can assure that there will be a longer essay about this topic in the future.

This knife was a commissional work and it's called "Hagedis". It was made of reindeer-antler, black, vulcanized fiber and green, stabilized maple burl. The blade I used was made by Poul Strande.

This knife is called "Flame" and I still own it myself.
It is made of curly birch, nickelsilver, vulcanized fiber and stabilized maple burl. I used a swedish Bergström-blade.

I am not used to work with wood as much as with leather, but it is always a nice occupation while sitting outdoors, maybe at a campfire, at a lake - I guess you get an idea what I am talking about...
Therefor I never forget some carving tools when I am out there in the forests or mountains...

Older works I - Carved Drinking Horns

Once upon a time, back in the first years of the new millenium it all started with the carving of drinking horns.
I primarily used different patterns of celtic or viking origin, but every now and then also own designs which had (and still have) their roots in the artworks of the ancient masters.
At this time I was active in Germany going by the name of DACHSGAU (which could be translated as badger's district)

Back then I was working together with my wife and we developed a way to colour the carvings but it turned out to be very costly in terms of time and work. On the long run it was the reason for us to restrict the work with horns and to look for other fields of artistic occupation. Welcome to my blog about Art, Craft and Spirit!
What is it you can expect from this site? Well, I will use this as a medium to present my arts, handcraft and from time to time some thoughts on different topics regarding the above mentioned, the spirit behind my works so to say.
This blog will showcase my work in addition to other channels within the world wide web like Myspace or my website.
In comparison to Myspace it will be less about communication, compared to my homepage the focus will be more on the backgrounds and intentions of the featured art than on lots of pictures and commercial aspects.
Furthermore it will certainly be more up to date than my website, as I will post my recent works here at least on a monthly basis.
